What are orthodontic emergencies?

Orthodontic emergencies are any severe issues that warrant a quick trip to the dental clinic. They are not that common and may entail issues to do with infections that cause swelling in the face or mouth. Trauma or injury to the face, mouth, or teeth may also leave you requesting emergency dental care. If you’re experiencing any severe pain, you can seek help from emergency dentists.

What can I do about minor emergencies?

Braces consist of various components: brackets, archwires, hooks, and elastic ties. The components may become damaged from eating hard foods, incurring mouth injuries, or from vigorous brushing. For minor problems, your orthodontist can even give professional medical advice over the phone, giving you tips on how to best alleviate the discomfort before he books you for an appointment. But here are some common issues and what you can generally do about them:

Loose Brackets

Brackets contain the slot that holds the archwire. Together, they allow the dentist to control how the tooth moves. A bonding cement secures the bracket to the teeth, and it may generally last for the duration of the treatment. However, the cement holding the bracket may become loose with everyday use of your teeth or from excessive stress.

First, check to see if the arch-wire is still being held in place by the bracket. If so, you can use orthodontic wax to reattach it. Here are some tips on using the wax:

Make sure the area under the teeth is clean by brushing it. You’ll remove any trapped food particles or built-up plague.

You need to apply the right amount of wax. More doesn’t mean better. So, how do you measure? Base your amount on the area you need to apply it. It should be a small ball, and you can roll it between your fingers for up to 5 seconds to soften it.

Place the ball of wax you’ve rolled between your fingers over the bracket, rolling it several times to make it stick. It may form a small lump.

Orthodontic wax is totally safe, and it also provides relief against any sharp protrusions that may irritate the insides of your mouth. It reduces irritation and improves comfortability. Still, you’ll need to schedule a visit with the orthodontist at your earliest convenience, so they can apply the longer-lasting cement.

Protruding Or Broken Wire

Arch wires connect with brackets to align the teeth. But the wires may become loose, causing them to protrude and push against your cheeks. Here, the fix may be quick and simple. Use a pencil eraser or cotton swab to push it back into position. Wires can also become completely dislodged. Now, you could use a pair of tweezers to nudge them back in their slots. It’s important to exercise caution and not force them. You can also use orthodontic wax to cover the pointed ends of the loose archwires to reduce irritation.

Broken Retainer

You generally have a retainer installed to hold your newly straightened teeth. The device helps prevent your teeth from reverting to their original positions before treatment. They also maintain the gaps between new teeth and wisdom teeth in the teenage years and stabilize the bite.

You may either have a permanent fixed retainer or a removable one. Either way, time may become when your retainers break.

For removal retainers that you can take out for meals, stop using them altogether, and get help from an orthodontist right away. If bonded retainers are loose, you’ll generally feel some roughness against your tongue. It’s recommended that you treat this as a dental emergency and seek help from an emergency dentist near you.

Loose Bands

Bands fit around your molars and act as the anchor for the archwire that spans the length of your teeth and braces. Give priority to loose brands, and schedule a visit with your local dentist as soon as possible.

Shaky Or Painful Teeth

Hang in there; loose or arching teeth means that each individual tooth is realigning. You may find chewing to be painful, and teeth will feel tender. Over-the-counter painkillers can help alleviate some of the pain, and you can also perform salt water rinses at least two times a day. Speak to your orthodontist for recommendations on the best numbing gel.
